In celebration of the 39th Olympic Day of the Chinese Olympic Committee, the Beijing Olympic City Development Association (BODA) and the People’s Daily Smart Media Institute jointly launched the “Olympic Culture Lecture Hall Special Programme – Dialogue on the Power of Music · Youth Concert” at the Beijing Olympic Museum on 23 June 2025. The concert was live streamed on the People’s Daily’s mobile application, presenting the audience a feast blending the charm of the Olympics and music.
The concert featured a dozen classic Olympic songs including the Olympic Hymn, You and Me, Snowflakes and Together for a Shared Future by nine choirs, young soprano singer Xu Jingjing, singer Li Siya and other performers. The nine choirs were the Beijing Olympic Games Community Choir, Jinfan Chorus of Beijing Chen Jinglun High School, Angels Chorus, Communication University of China A Capella Group, Central Conservatory of Music’s Institute of Music Education Choir, Beijing Wuzi University Choir, Capital Medical University Student Choir, Beijing Technology and Business University Choir, and Snowflake Choir of Beijing Normal University Student Art Troupe. At the end of the concert, the guests and the performers sang the well-known song “My People, My Country” together, expressing their love and wishes for the country.

During the interview session, hostess Xu Chunni had a dialogue with several guests on Olympic music. The dialogue got deep into the behind-the-scenes stories, unravelling how music practitioners created Olympic songs that embody the Olympic spirit, integrate cultural elements, resonate with people and convey the ethos of the times.

Gao Tian, former Deputy Director of the Cultural Activity Department of the Beijing Organising Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, said that music was embedded in all cultural activities of the Beijing 2022 Games and ran through the entire preparation and staging process. She was involved in the collection of musical works for the Games, allowing her to feel strongly the unique and far-reaching impact of Olympic music. The Olympic musical works for Beijing 2008 and the Beijing 2022 Games connects with people across different regions, inspire vitality and enthusiasm and encourage people to embrace sports and engage in winter sports. These musical works also cultivate a stronger sense of cultural confidence, demonstrate the glory of Chinese culture and the ethos of the Chinese nation, and present a China that is credible, appealing and respectable.

Zhao Lin, music director of the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Games, introduced in details how they created musical works for the Opening Ceremony. He told some behind-the-scenes stories such as the overall strategy for music creation, the selection of composers and guidance for them, the creation of musical works, and how the performance team aligned with the creative ideas of the Opening Ceremony.

Zhang Shuai is the composer of Snowflakes, the theme song for the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Games. He recounted the sources of inspiration and the arduous journey of creation, illustrating how musicians, much like athletes, continually challenged themselves and pushed the limits.

Hu Shuai, composer of a shortlisted musical work for the Beijing 2022 Games, talked about how folk music elements were embedded in the creation process as a way of combining cultural preservation and innovation.

Baohu Ercha, composer of The Snow Dragon’s Chant for the countdown to the Beijing 2022 Games, shared his thoughts on how to make music appeal to young people. He also reviewed his own journey of innovation to align with the Olympic spirit.

Wang Han, who won the women’s synchronised 3m springboard championship at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, was also present at the dialogue. She shared how she consistently persevered through challenges and achieved personal breakthroughs.

This concert and dialogue used music as a medium to tell Olympic stories, presenting the transformations of China on the Olympic stage. They also highlighted the timeless appeal of the Olympic spirit and demonstrated the unique power of music in promoting the Olympic culture.
