On August 3, the 19th Beijing International Sports Film Week completed the preliminary evaluation of the 222 entries received, which fell into eight sections: Olympic Games and the Olympic Spirit, Documentaries, Movies, Sport & Society/Sport & Disability, TV Shows and New Media, Winter Sports, Sport Advert and Student Works. The preliminary evaluation was completed by a jury composed of senior sport and film and television workers, after which 46 works showing the charm of sports and the fighting spirit of athletes from different angles were selected for the final evaluation.
This year’s call for entries has attracted the active participation of the China Media Group, Xinhua News Agency, Beijing Radio and Television Station, and Phoenix Satellite TV, as well as some new media platforms, enhancing the social influence and widening the solicitation channels of the Sports Film Week. The productions that stood out in the final evaluation will be announced in early September and some of them will be recommended to compete in the Sport Movies & TV – Milano International FICTS Fest.
Themed “Dual Olympic Dreams in Images,” the 19th Beijing International Sports Film Week is jointly organized by the Beijing International Film Festival Organizing Committee, the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC) and Beijing Olympic City Development Association, and undertaken by the COC Press Committee and Beijing Olympic City Development Center. It is an Olympic brand project initiated in 2005. Since 2009, the Sports Film Week has officially become an important leg of the world finals of the Milano International FICTS Fest, jointly sponsored by the Federation Internationale Cinema Television Sportifs (FICTS) and the International Olympic Committee. Among the outstanding entries received in 2022, five productions, namely, Breaking Through, Breathe, All in Love, A Date with Ice and Snow and The Wonder of Dance, were nominated for the World Finals of the 40th Milano International FICTS Fest. Among them, A Date with Ice and Snow and The Wonder of Dance won the Golden Garland Award.
Appendix: Introduction to the Judges
1. Shi Xuping
Senior editor of China Media Group; senior editor and producer of the sports documentary World Sports Report (Shijie Tiyu Baodao) and Sports (Tiyu Renjian); the host of the interview program Sports Salon (Tiyu Shalong) and Five-Ring Night Talk (Wuhuan Yehua); the winner of many awards at home and abroad for the sports documentaries he independently produced or served as the lead creative team member.
2. Shan Wanli
Research fellow of China Film Art Research Center. Research interests: French films, documentary films, and sport films. Main research results: He is the chief editor of Documentary Film Documents, Documentary Film Analysis and History of Chinese Documentary Film, wrote and translated hundreds of film articles, participated in the editing of dozens of film books and periodicals, and is the co-editor of La Grande Collection de Filmologie.
3. Yu Baimei
Director, scriptwriter, and producer. His has directed the films Ping Pong: The Triumph, Looking Up, and My People, My Homeland.
In 2014, the film The Break-up Guru he wrote and directed was released. In 2015, the film Devil and Angel he wrote and directed was released. In 2017, the film Wolf Warriors 2 he produced was released. In 2019, the film Looking Up he wrote and directed was released. In 2020, the film My People, My Homeland he co-wrote and directed was released. In 2021, the film My Country, My Parents he co-wrote was released. In 2022, the film Ping Pong: The Triumph he wrote and directed was released. In 2023, the film Meg 2: The Trench he co-wrote was released.
4. He Xinghui
Professor and doctor of the School of Journalism and Communication, Beijing Sport University, and deputy secretary general of the Specialized Committee for Sport Films and Television, Chinese Collegial Association for Visual Art. His research interest covers Olympic visual identity culture and communication, and theory and practice of sport documentaries. He has authored a number of academic publications, including The History of Olympic Official Movies, the Complete Works of Sports Documentary Classics, and Visual Media, Olympic Ceremonies and Cultural Identity. He participated in the compilation of several research reports such as Research Report on the Development of Documentaries in China and Research on the Creation of Documentaries in the New Era, and published more than 40 papers in core journals and important academic conferences at home and abroad.
5. Sun Jishun
Producer, presenter, and head of Change Film. He served in Beijing News, Sohu, Phoenix, and then Tangren Media before founding Change Film. He invested in the production of On Your Mark, Alley Cat King of the Stadium, Alley Cat King of the Ski Resort, Romantic Detective, wrote and directed You in a Red Chamber, I Journey West and My Airhostess Roommate, and published the novels Jiaokou Chengzan and Meet the Albatross.
