What is the official film of Olympic Games?

The official film is a documentary produced by film and TV organizations commissioned by the host city’s organising committee as required by the International Olympic Committee in accordance with the Olympic Charter. It has become a tradition to make an official film since the Stockholm Olympics in 1912. In 1948, the term Official Film was officially adopted. So far, more than 40 official films have been produced.

In 1964, Tokyo Olympiad produced by Japanese director Kon Ichikawa broadened the horizon from sports competitions to building a spirit between people inside and outside the arena with a new form of expression from a psychological, instead of a realistic, dimension. This breakthrough gave the official film a great historical value.

16 Days of Glory, the official film of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, began to focus on stories of athletes outside the arena, and also recorded the confident rise of Chinese athletes in the global arena.

Days of Truce of the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games put individuals such as taxi drivers, star athletes, and members of the first refugee Olympic team under the spotlight. The official films of Olympic Games have long been not only a documentary of competitions, but also a microcosm of the times.

The Everlasting Flame of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games is also the jewel in the treasure trove of Olympics official films. The film took 6 months and witnessed the birth of Olympic heroes and recorded the glorious chapter of the Chinese nation's realization of its 100-year Olympic dream. The Everlasting Flame was screened as the closing film at the 33rd Montreal World Film Festival and won a special award.
