(BEIJING, September 10) -- The Ying Tung Natatorium for water polo and swimming of the modern pentathlon events of the Olympic Games in 2008 has been completed recently.

With a capacity of 4,852 seats and a floor area of 44.635 square meters, the complex not only can meet the requirements of the Beijing Olympics, but also the rising demands of the Beijing residents for physical exercise.

Located at the Olympic Sports Center, the natatorium is the result of renovation featuring the idea of sustainable development, application of state-of-the-art materials to protect the environment and maximum use of natural ventilation and lighting. It has set an example of resources-saving, solid waste treatment, protection against electronic interference and the use of new products to avoid ozone depleting substances.

Ying Tung Natatorium begins to take in water.

The natatorium was the main venue for swimming in the 1990 Asian Games, when its exterior wall was unable to keep stable temperatures and insulate heat successfully, causing a great loss of energy.

In the process of renovation, high-standard energy-saving fenders made of aluminum, magnesium and manganese alloys were used.

Electric dormant windows were added to prevent "dirty heat" during the Olympic competitions and to introduce natural light for training and fitness activities after the Olympics.

Meanwhile, with the use of the sunshade curtains inside, sunlight can be taken in maximum quantities to meet the needs of the Olympic competitions. The architects described such a design scheme as the addition of "eyes" and a "breath-taking organ."

The 1,700 square meter fixed solar battery array on the roof of the training complex neighboring the natatorium can collect enough solar energy for the lighting and water-heating needs of the venue.

The renovated project has changed its single air-conditioning system to a dual one to fulfill the different temperature requirements of the stand and the competition area -- a change that will please everybody.
