Fu Yiquan: Working for Beijing Olympic Games steadily and surely
My name is Fu Yiquan, and I'm 103-years-old.
Sure I'm old, but I stay in good physical and spiritual state. I have been a public security volunteer in my community for over 30 years and on the patrol everyday, so I feel I'm still young. With the Beijing Olympic Games coming soon, I feel happy from the bottom of my heart.
I like watching TV, especially the news. There are always newspapers by my bed. On the day Olympic volunteer recruitment began, my younger friends encouraged me to apply. I was pleased. I told them, "I agree with you! I need to do something steadily and surely for the Olympic Games. Although I'm too old to go into the competition field, I can keep public safety. The Olympic Games can be held smoothly only on the grounds that each community is kept in good order." Therefore, I signed up and was received unexpectedly! It is said that I'm the oldest volunteer, and I feel very satisfied to do my part for the Games.
I was born in Shandong in 1905 and have lived in this community since coming to Beijing in my 30s. I was very hot-blooded when I was young. In the 1960s, I retired and couldn't stay idle, so I worked for the public safety of my community. I got up at 8 every morning and patrolled around to supervise after breakfast. I have done this for more than 30 years. My youngest daughter-in-law and my granddaughter sometimes join me, which makes me feel especially glad.
I never thought that I could catch up with the Beijing Olympic Games, which is surely the first and last time for me. I still remember the night when Beijing won the bid for the Olympic Games; the sound of firecrackers kept going on deep into the night. Therefore, I was very careful while patrolling, afraid of firecrackers. My ears went numb that night while patrolling.
I am only a common person. I never thought that I could get any honor from patrolling. Unexpectedly, I was appraised as one of the "Top Ten Volunteers". With the Beijing Olympic Games coming very soon, we need to do something down-to-earth for it. Beijing is our home! Our efforts are for our home. I'm very glad to see China grow more and more powerful day by day! The Beijing Olympic Games make me feel younger and younger.
