Competition Format

Competition System

The competition will be run in an elimination format with repechage. Judokas will be divided into two tables, A and B, by means of a draw, and in turn into two groups within each table: A1, A2, B1 and B2. The elimination system will be used to produce two finalists.

Seeding of judokas based on the results of the World Championships 2007 (medalists only) will take place provided they have entered the same weight category.

All judokas defeated by the group winners of A1, A2, B1 and B2 will take part in the repechage of their respective group, e. g. the first competitor defeated by the winner of the group A1 will compete against the second competitor defeated by the winner of the group, the winner of this contest will compete with the third defeated and so on; the winner of the repechage of the group A1 will then have to compete with the winner of the repechage of group A2 for the final of repechage.

The two winners of the final of repechage will compete against the losers of the final of the opposite table for the bronze medals (2 are awarded).

The winners of table A and table B will fight off for the gold and silver medals.

For the final block, the finals of repechage as well as the finals of tables will be organized by round simultaneously on both competition areas. The bronze medals contest will be organized successively on one competition area as well as the finals.
