Competition Format
The archery competition shall be organized in the ranking round (FITA 70m Round) and the Olympic round. The Olympic round consists of the team eliminations, team finals, individual eliminations and individual finals for both women and men.
Competition Day 1 - Ranking Round
The 128 archers will shoot in the ranking round at the Olympic Green Archery Ranking Field, 64 women in the first session and 64 men in the second session. The ranking round consists of 72 arrows shot in 12 ends of six arrows at 70m on a 122cm target face. The shooting time limit in the ranking round will be four minutes for each end of six arrows. From the scores shot in the ranking round, archers will be ranked 1-64 and teams will be ranked 1-16.
Competition Days 2-3: Olympic Round Team Competition
All elimination and final matches will be held in the Olympic Green Archery Field. Each team will consist of three archers. Teams will be ranked according to the results of the ranking round (Competition Day 1) and then paired off into two groups of eight teams in readiness for the match-play shooting. A team match will consist of four ends of six arrows, with each archer shooting two arrows per end on a 122cm target face at 70m. There will be a two-minute time limit for each end of six arrows. Only after shooting three arrows from one team (one arrow by one archer of the same team in sequence) and the clock being paused to store its remaining time, will the other team start shooting and its clock to be started. The winning team will progress to the next stage.
Competition Day 2: Olympic Round Women’s Team Event
Sixteen teams will be paired for the 1/8 elimination (No.1 vs No.16, No.2 vs No.15, etc).This will be followed by the 1/4 team elimination, the semifinals and then the bronze and gold/silver medal matches.
Competition Day 3: Olympic Round Men’s Team Event
This competition format shall be the same as for the women’s team event.
Competition Days 4 -7: Olympic Round Individual Events
All Olympic round individual elimination and final matches will be held in the Olympic Green Archery Field. Following the ranking round, archers will be divided into 8 groups lettered from A to H. Each group of 8 archers will be divided into 2 subgroups of four by two pairs. As in the ranking round, they will shoot at 70m on a 122cm target face. Each archer will shoot four ends of three arrows (a total of 12 arrows). Archers between each arrow will shoot alternately, with each archer having a 30sec-time limit per arrow. The higher placed archer in the ranking round will decide who shoots first in the first end of each mach, and then the archer with the lowest cumulative scores will shoot first in each following end. If the scores tie, the archer who shot first in the first end will begin shooting first. This rhythm and timing will apply to all of the individual matches. The winner of the match will progress to the next stage.
Competition Day 4: Olympic Round Women’s Elimination 1/32 and 1/16
During the 1/32 and 1/16 elimination rounds the archers that win the 1/32 will shoot subsequently the 1/16 elimination according to a fixed match play chart, based on the results of the ranking round. The top ranked archer will be matched with the 64th archer; the second will be matched with the 63rd, and so on. The 16 winners will progress to the 1/8 elimination.
Competition Day 5: Olympic Round Men’s Elimination 1/32 and 1/16
For the men’s elimination 1/32 and 1/16, the same format as for the women will be followed.
Competition Day 6: Olympic Round Women’s 1/8 Elimination and Finals
The 1/8 elimination will be shot in the morning. The 1/8 elimination will involve 16 archers, paired into eight matches with the eight winners progressing onto the quarterfinals. In the afternoon session, the remaining eight archers will compete in the quarterfinals. The four winning archers will progress to the semifinals, to determine who will compete in the bronze and gold/silver matches.
Competition Day 7: Olympic Round Men’s 1/8 Elimination and Finals
Men will shoot the 1/8, 1/4, semifinals, bronze and gold/silver matches in the same format as the women on the previous day.
