Lake Placid 1980 -- XIII Olympic Winter Games

The 1980 Winter Games, held in Lake Placid, New York, were filled with impressive performances. The great Swedish skier, Ingemar Stenmark, won both the giant slalom and the slalom. Hanni Wenzel did the same in the women's races and her nation, Liechtenstein, became the smallest country to produce an Olympic champion.[Full story]

Highlights

Eric HeidenEric Heiden (USA-speed skating) accomplished a unique feat by completing a grand slam of five out of five Olympic crowns, beating the Olympic record each time. His title over 1,500m was more eventful as he came very close to falling. In his final victory, the 10,000m, he broke the world record by 6.20 seconds. [Full story]
