The star of the games
Nadia Comaneci (ROM-gymnastics) was the star of the Games. She was the first gymnast in Olympic history to be awarded the perfect score of 10.0. She achieved her first perfect 10 on the uneven parallel bars and the judges awarded her the maximum mark seven times.
Viren extends the line
Lasse Viren (FIN-athletics) extended the line of great Finnish distance runners by winning the 5,000m and 10,000m events for the second time in a row. He also competed in the marathon, attempting to emulate Emil Zatopek's 1952 distance treble, and in his first attempt at this distance, finished fifth.
Performance in diving
With his victory in platform diving, Klaus Dibiasi (ITA-diving) became the first Olympic diver to win three successive gold medals and to be awarded medals in four Olympic Games.
