Milestone

For the first time in Olympic history, all National Olympic Committees were represented at the Olympic Games. First-time participation of Burundi, Cape Verde, Comoros, Dominica, Guinea-Bissau, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Nauru, Palestine, Saint Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia, Sao Tome & Principe and Slovakia. Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Republic of Moldova, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Ukraine participated for the first time under their "new" national names.

These Games had a total audience of 19.6 billion (spectators and TV viewers). The Games of the XXVI Olympiad in Atlanta, like those of the XXIII Olympiad in Los Angeles, were also financed by private funds.
