Nalbandian ousts defending champion Massu

(BEIJING, August 12) -- Argentina's David Nalbandian has dashed defending Olympic champion Nicolas Massu's hopes for further medal glory, winning 7-6(0), 6-1 over the Chilean player in the second round in the Men's Singles at the Olympic Green Tennis Center on Tuesday, August 12.

Massu, who also won Doubles gold at the Athens 2004 Olympics, fought hard in the first set and traded service breaks with Nalbandian, eventually forcing the No.7 seed to a tiebreak. But Nalbandian dominated the tiebreak, winning it 7-0, to secure the first set.

Massu's resistance wilted and Nalbandian wrapped up the second set in just 28 minutes to advance to a third round meeting with Gael Monfils of France.

Massu and Fernando Gonzalez of Chile failed in their bid to defend their Athens Doubles gold when they fell to Dmitry Tursunov and Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the first round.
