(BEIJING, August 12) -- Italian Francesca Schiavone and Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark both surprised higher-seeded opponents to advance to the final 16 of the Women's Singles event at the Olympic Green Tennis Center on Tuesday, August 12.
Schiavone, who often produces inspired tennis when representing her country, ousted No. 8 seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland 6-3, 7-6(8/6).
The Italian competitor, who reached the singles quarterfinals in the Athens 2004 Games, battled back from 1-4 down in the second set to seal victory.
"In the Olympic Games, nobody from Italy has won a medal in Tennis," Schiavone said.
"For me it would be fantastic, but it's a long way."
Rising Danish star Wozniacki pulled off another surprise, defeating No. 10 seed Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia 6-1, 6-3 to book a spot in the third round.
The Dane took advantage of 42 unforced errors from her opponent to take control and although Hantuchova broke back when Wozniacki served for the match, she regrouped to break back and secure the win.
"I feel like I played a good game and I'm so happy that I won over Hantuchova," Wozniacki said.
"It's a great win for me as she is a very good player."
