Diving Day 2 Preview: China eyes more Diving Gold

Updated: 2008-08-11 00:38:11

(BEIJING, August 10) -- Lin Yue and Huo Liang will try to grab China's second Diving gold in the Men's Synchronized 10m Platform on Monday, August 11, at the National Aquatics Center. Their teammates, Guo Jingjing and Wu Minxia strolled to victory in the Women's 3m Synchronized Springboard event on Sunday. Eight pairs will participate in the men's event.

Lin and Huo won at the 2007 World Championships in Melbourne by a margin of more than 22 points and claimed the title at the 16th FINA World Cup at the Water Cube.

They'll be challenged by Russian duo Gleb Galperin and Dmitriy Dobroskok, who were silver medalists at the 2007 World Championships. Due to Galperin's spinal injury, the Russian pair did not participate in the World Cup this year, but have won at two Grand Prix circuits (in Russia and Canada).

Robert Newbery and Mathew Helm of Australia will also contend for a spot on the podium. The pair won a Grand Prix in the United States in May and finished in third at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. They retired after the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne but came back last year to participate in their third Olympic Games.

British prodigy Thomas Daley will appear at his first Olympic Games as the youngest Diving participant. The 14-year-old and his British partner Blake Aldridge earned gold at the World Series in Great Britain this year. Many are already picking Daley as a favorite to win in London in 2012.
