(BEJING, June 1) -- Yao Ming, one of the most recognized Chinese athletes in the world and the idol of many Chinese youngsters, held a live telephone conversation with children, especially those from earthquake-affected areas, on June 1, Children's Day.
Topics were unrestricted and discussions mainly surrounded growing pains and happiness. Yao recorded a message in advance saying that he missed them and wanted to wish them a happy Children's Day. The kids were so jubilant after hearing Yao's voice that they forgot the questions they had prepared. Some older ones asked about Yao's rehabilitation from his foot injury. To this, the basketball star replied, "I can do some running and jumping now and will have some group trainings in two weeks."
The children's questions came from vitually every angle — what did Yao think about his behind-the-back-dribble in a game against the Pacers? What did he think about his all-star-vote surpassing Jordan's? How did he overcome difficulties and challenges? What is his favorite cartoon? Yao told them that to overcome difficulties, patience and hard work is needed day in and day out. "Just like building a house, maybe you can only lay one brick a day, but after it's all finished, you will see a house standing in front of you."
His favorite cartoon -- Transformers.
In talking with an 11-year-old student from Yingxiu Primary School who was buried under debris for more than 20 hours, Yao expressed his admiration of the child's bravery and determination, encouraging him to carry on towards a bright future.
In the end, Yao made a promise that he would visit the earthquake struck areas. "It's great to see these kids are so optimistic, resilient and energetic. I appreciate their support and care for me. They truly make me proud."
