BEIJING, August 16) -- Women's Singles and Men's Doubles will see final showdowns on day eight of Olympic Badminton, while the Men's Singles bronze will be up for grabs and Mixed Doubles will hold semifinals.
Battling for the Women's Singles gold medal are World No. 1 Xie Xingfang and defending Olympic champion Zhang Ning, both of China. The bronze medal will go to the winner between third seed Lu Lan of China and Indonesia's Maria Kristin Yulianti, who stunned the sixth-seeded Danish veteran Tine Rasmussen in the second round.
Vying for Men's Doubles gold are World No. 1 Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia and second-seeded Cai Yung and Fu Haifeng of China. Meanwhile the two other semifinalists, Lars Paaske and Jonas Rasmussen of Denmark and Lee Jae-jin and Hwang Ji-man of the Republic of Korea, will compete for third place.
In Men's Singles, fourth seed Chen Jin of China will take on ROK shuttler Lee Hyun-il for bronze. Chen had bowed to compatriot World No. 1 Lin Dan, while Lee Hyun-il failed to upset World No. 2 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia the previous day.
The only event that won't have a medal at stake is Mixed Doubles, which will, instead, hold its semifinals. Indonesia has two entrants: World No. Liliyana Natsir and Nova Widianto and third seeds Flandy Limpele and Vita Marissa. The first pair heads into a clash with China's fourth seeds He Hanbin and Yu Yang, freshly crowned in Women's Doubles with her partner Du Jing, while the other duo will play Lee Hyo-jung and Lee Yong-dae of the ROK.
