Updated:2007-10-03 From:CRI

More than 20,000 people havetaken part in a tai chi event in Hong Kong on Sunday, setting a new city record for tai chi performance.

In the heat of the sun, masters from different martial arts organisations led the brightly-uniformed participants through their exercises.

The performance was accompanied by Chinese music and lasted 20 minutes.

The Mega Tai Chi Show was one of a series of events marking Hong Kong's handover to China from the United Kingdom ten years ago.

Tai chi enthusiasts of different ages and from all walks of life exchanged knowledge and skills with both local and mainland masters.

"It can be done for health and fitness. Everyone's body and mind can be more pleasant."

Hong Kong's previous tai chi record was set in 2001. At that time, more than 10,400 people put on a 30 minute display.
