BEIJING, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, stressed security for the upcoming Beijing Olympics on Sunday.

After overseeing the security work at major venues including the "bird nest" and "water cube", Zhou stressed the importance of a safe Games.

"Security is a top priority of the Beijing Olympics. It guarantees a successful Olympic Games and has a great deal to do with social stability and the national image," Zhou said.

Zhou also urged intensifying anti-terrorist efforts before and during the Games.

"Fighting against terrorism is the top priority of the security work," he said, stressing the need for intensified information collection and a closer international cooperation to counter the threat of terrorism.

He urged public security departments to ensure the safety of the venues, guarantee trouble-free events and guard against violence and disturbances.
