Full coverage: Fifth IOC/BOCOG briefing
(BEIJING, August 13) -- On August 13, the fifth joint IOC/BOCOG press briefing was held at Beijing's Main Press Center (MPC). Wang Wei, executive vice-president and secretary general of BOCOG, Liu Shaowu, director of BOCOG Security Department, Gilbert Felli, IOC's Olympic Games executive director and Giselle Davies, IOC director of Communications were present at the press conference.
During Wednesday's briefing, Wang provided an overview of the previous day's Olympic happenings. On August 12, the fourth day of the Games, there were a total of 24 competition events staged in 28 venues, 18 in Beijing and 10 in co-host cities. For competitions, 2,854 athletes, 2,030 officials from 705 participating teams, 2,108 technical officials, 380,146 spectators, 5,867 VIPs and 8,264 journalists showed up at venues. In addition, 2,036 athletes and 643 team officials from 345 teams took the day to train in the venues. Competition organizations and venue operations ran smoothly throughout the day.
Of the 24 competitions, 9 had an attendance rate of over 90 percent, 9 over 80 percent, 4 over 70 percent and the remaining 2 over 60 percent.
The fifth day of the Olympic Games will see 27 games in 30 venues; a total of 17 gold medals will be awarded on Wednesday, said officials at the press conference. Beijing and Tianjin will experience light rain in the late afternoon. Shanghai will remain hot and humid.
