Maria Sharapova serves as the first torchbearer
(February 8) At dawn on February 8 Beijing time, the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games formally kicked off. At around 2:55 a.m. Beijing time, two famous Russian athletes, Irina Rodnina and Vladislav Tretiak, lit the flame together. At around 2:49 a.m., the holy flame of this Winter Olympics entered into the Opening Ceremony. Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova, a Sochi native and winner of career Grand Slam in women’s tennis, ran with the Olympic torch into the stadium.
