Chechen Militant Leader Threatens to ‘Derail’ the Sochi 2014

July 3 (the Times) - the militant Chechen separatist Doku Umarov, threatened on Wednesday to instigate a series of attacks to stop the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games which will take place in the Black Sea city, Sochi in 2014.


Umarov regularly used the web site to send message to the Islamic fighters he refers to as mujahedeen.


As the most-wanted terrorist in Russia, Umarov diverered information to his followers via videos from time to time. Russian authorities had ever declared his death for several times.


The Sochi 2014 will take place from February 7 -23, 2014, first Olympic Games in Russia. According to the Associated Press, the overall bill for the games stands at $51 billion, making them by far the most expensive Olympics in history.


Sochi, which is due to host the Games next February, is a few hundred kilometers [miles] from the volatile and mountainous North Caucasus region in southern Russia where there is almost daily violence. The leader of the radical Islamic Caucasus Emirate, Umarov is and has earned himself the nickname “Russia’s Osama bin Laden.”
Umarov argued that his moratorium on attacks before was deemed weak by the Russian authorities. He added that they would prove his ‘kindness’ not the weakness to the Kremlin, and he urged his men to “do their utmost to derail” the games.
