June 24 (People.com.cn) - Dmitry Chernyshenko, President and CEO of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee, said today that the Olympic Flame at the Opening Ceremony of Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games will be lightened with the Olympic Torch which had been taken on a spacewalk.

On June 24, the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee signed a cooperation agreement with Roskosmos (RKA), the Russian Federal Space Agency. According to the agreement, the RKA will be responsible for the torch relay in International Space Station (ISS) and outer space for Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

According to Chernyshenko, the unique structure of the Olympic Torch of Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games enables the Olympic Flame to be lightened under any condition, even under water. However, for safety consideration, Russia will not lighten the torch in ISS or outer space, and the Olympic Flame at the Opening Ceremony of Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games will be lightened with the Olympic Torch which had been taken on a spacewalk.

Vladimir Popovkin, the General Director of RKA, said that the Olympic Torch will be carried in the Soyuz TMA-11M spacecraft in November 2013. Russian cosmonauts Oleg Kotov and Sergei Ryazansky will take the torch on a spacewalk. Russian cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin will then bring the torch back to the earth.

If the Olympic Torch of Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games be brought to the space successfully, Russia will be the first nation taking Olympic Torch on a spacewalk.
