May 30 (RIA Novosti) - The presentation of the Olympic and Paralympic medals, which will be awarded at the Sochi 2014 Winter Games, took place in St. Petersburg today during IOC Executive Board meeting and the 11th "SportAccord" Annual International Sports Convention. These medals have exquisite design and fully feature the cultures of Russia.
Dmitry Chernyshenko, President of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee, said: “Medals are the most important trophies at the Olympics. Any athlete is dreaming about them. The organizers tried to bring a part of a country into these awards, so that the athletes could take with them memories not only about the competitions but also about Russia. We did everything so that these medals would most memorable and innovative.”
It is reported that each medal takes up to 18 hours to be created and the latest design and technology processes have been used in the manufacturing process.
During the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, a record of 98 sets of medals will be up for grabs in 15 sports, and the number of sports events will also set a new record, so the number of about 1,300 medals will be manufactured. Depending on the type of metal used, the Sochi 2014 Olympic medals weigh between 460 and 531 grams.
