Volleyball venue embodies three Olympic concepts

(BEIJING, September 6) -- The external "batfish" shape of the Beijing Institute of Technology Gymnasium is not the only distinguishing feature of the venue that will hold the Olympic Games Volleyball events and the Good Luck Beijing Goalball events. Moreover, the venue fully exhibits the core of a "Green Olympics," "High-tech Olympics," and" People's Olympics."

Green Olympics

According to Yu Yaming, President of the Wu Zhou Engineering Design and Research Institute, the Gymnasium's design reflects the values of a Green Olympics through environmental-friendly features.

For example, three layers of insulation materials contribute to energy savings. In addition, the insulation layers would absorb noise from potentially heavy rains during competitions.

The venue will make the most of natural light let in through multiple windows and skylights, practically eliminating the need for artificial lighting indoors during the day.

The venue's new warm-up facilities also incorporate water-saving and energy-saving features.

High-tech Olympics

The net-like structure of the 22,632 sq. m. venue's rooftop was built by a method generally used only for bridge-construction. This method reduces the use of steel and results in a sturdy structure.

People's Olympics

Mr. Yu stressed that the venue successfully presents the relationship between "the environment, the architecture, and the people." He and his team considered designed the venue according to the needs of the athletes by placing themselves in the athletes' shoes. As a result, the venue features barrier-free facilities that accommodate both athletes and spectators with a disability.
