
Hockey is the oldest known ball and stick game. Records exist of it having been played in Persia in 2000 BC. The name hockey probably derives from the French hocquet, or shepherd’s crook, and refers to the crooked stick which is used to hit a small ball. PRINCIPLES
1. MEN
The following teams are entitled to take part in the Olympic Tournament for Men:
1.1 Host Nation – China 1 vacancy
The host nation of the Olympic Games shall be automatically qualified.
1.2 Continental Qualifications 8 vacancies
(i) Five (5) continental champions, namely:
Africa Africa Men's Olympic Qualifying Tournament
America 15th Pan American Games (men's hockey competition)
Asia 15th Asian Games (men's hockey competition)
Europe 11th EuroHockey Nations Championship for Men
Oceania 5th Men's Oceania Cup
(ii) Three (3) teams also to be determined at the relevant continental qualification tournaments set out in (i) above on the basis that China is not also the Continental Champion.
The three (3) quotas allocated to the continents based upon the FIH World Ranking List at the completion of the Men's World Cup, 2006 are as follows:
Europe 2 quotas
Asia 1 quota
1.3 Olympic Qualification tournaments 3 vacancies
To make a total of 12 teams participating in the men’s Olympic Tournament, the FIH will organise three (3) Olympic Qualification tournaments each comprising of up to 6 nations in which three (3) vacancies will be decided. The winner of each Olympic
Qualification Tournament will qualify for the Olympic Games.
Period: To be played in the period 1 November 2007 – 30 April 2008.
Locations: Auckland (NZL), Santiago (CHI) and Kakamigahara (JPN)
Participants: Eighteen (18) teams to be determined at the relevant continental qualification tournaments.
The eighteen (18) quotas allocated to the continents based upon the FIH World Ranking List at the completion of the Men's World Cup, 2006 are as follows:
Africa 1 quota
Asia 4 quotas
Europe 8 quotas
Oceania 1 quota
Pan America 4 quotas
Maximum per NOC: 1 men's team
Host: The nations to take part in the qualifying tournaments will automatically include the respective host countries of the respective qualifying tournaments and will be allocated one of the Continental Federation quotas.
Reserves: The next highest ranked nation(s) in accordance with the FIH World Ranking List at the time of withdrawal shall determine the reserve country(ies) in the event of a withdrawal by a qualified team.
2. WOMEN
The following teams are entitled to take part in the Olympic Tournament for women:
2.1 Host Nation – China 1 vacancy
The host nation of the Olympic Games shall be automatically qualified.
2.2 Continental Qualifications 8 vacancies
