Canoe/Kayak Slalom
A whalebone and driftwood frame, with a sea-lion skin stretched tautly over it and waterproofed with whale fat, hardly suggests a budding Olympic sport. Yet the kayaks that meant life to the Inuits in the Arctic for centuries have become the racing kayaks of the modern world - even if the building materials have changed.[Full story]

QUOTA
2.1 Athlete Quota Places
(a) The maximum number of Athlete Quota Places available for Qualification is 330. 328 Athlete Quota Places will be allocated under this Qualification System by ICF and 2 Athlete Quota Places will be allocated by the TPC.
(b) The allocation of these Athlete Quota Places across Disciplines will be as follows:
2.2 Boat Quota Places
(a) The minimum number of Boat Quota Places available for Qualification will be as follows:
2.3 Maximum Athlete and Boat Quota Places per NOC
(a) NOCs may qualify a maximum of 16 Boat Quota Places in all Events, with a maximum number of one Boat for each Event and a maximum of 28 Athlete Quota Places.
(b) In accordance with the Olympic Charter the final entry for Athletes and Boats remains the responsibility of the NOC while Athlete and Boat Quota allocation remains the responsibility of ICF.

Michal Martikan At the age of 16, Michal Martikan became the youngest winner of a World Cup slalom canoeing event. Three months later, now 17 years old, Martikan was in sixth place after the first run of the canoe slalom singles event at the 1996 Olympics. [Full story]
