BOCOG extends sincere condolences to family members of US coach's assistant

(BEIJING, August 9) -- BOCOG is deeply saddened to learn of the tragic attack on two relatives of a coach for the United States Olympic Men's Volleyball Team and a Chinese guide and extends sincere condolences to the victims and their families.

On August 9, the two relatives and their Chinese tour guide were attacked by a Chinese man while visiting the Drum Tower, a tourist site near the Forbidden City in Beijing. One victim was killed and the other two seriously injured. The attacker then committed suicide by jumping off the second story of the Tower. The police were notified and arrived immediately at the scene, sent the injured victims to a nearby hospital for treatment and began an investigation.

At present, investigation into the rare and tragic incident is still under way. Beijing is a safe city, and the police are doing their best to provide a safe environment for all tourists, Chinese and international, during their travels in Beijing.
