Rogge Attended the 9th World Games

Cali, Colombia, July 25 (Xinhua News Agency, special dispatch, Journalist: Hou Xiwen) - The 9th World Games was held in Cali, Colombia on July 25. Jacques Rogge, the IOC President, Ron Froehlich, President of the International World Games Association, and Angelino Garzón, the Vice President of Columbia attended the Opening Ceremony.


The slogan of this World Games was “Fair Play to the Planet!” The Games lasted for 11 days with 26 sports events and 5 invited events, including bowling, sumo, fin swimming, and orienteering. According to the statistics of the World Games Association, there were a total of 4,500 athletes, coaches and officials from 101 countries and regions participated in this World Games.


The Chinese delegation sent 103 athletes to participate in 21 events in 12 categories such as billiards, tug-of-war, speed roller skating, wushu, rhythmic gymnastics, and trampoline. Chinese delegation won 14 medals, 10 silver medals, and 5 bronze medals in the last World Games, ranking the third in the gold medal table.    


World Games is an international sports event held once every four years, the competitive events are mainly the non-Olympic events, and the is held one year after the Olympic Games by International World Games Association (IWGA). The first World Games was held in Santa Clara, CA in the United States in 1981.
