[Athletics, or track and field]

Athletics, or track and field, is the original Olympic sport. It includes jumping, throwing, race walk, running and all-around events. The former two are called field, the race walk and throwing are called track, and the running, and the all-around event is made up of running, jumping and throwing, like decathlon men and heptathlon women.……

As the best traditional event in the Olympics, rowing is the propelling of a boat using a fixed oar as a lever. In modern sports, rowers race against each other either as individuals or in crews of two, four or eight.The races are divided into sculling and sweep oar. Basketball made its appearance at the 3rd Olympic Games as a demonstration sport in 1904. In 1908, united basketball rules were prepared in American and published in the world in various languages. [Boxing] Boxing joined the Olympic programme in 1904.

Modern amateur boxing made its Olympic debut at the 1904 Games in St. Louis. The 5th Olympic Games did not set such an event for Swiss thought it harmful for people’s health. The 6th, 12th and 13th Olympic Games didn’t take place for the World War I & II.……

[Football]

As ahighly-competitive team sport, football originates from China and can be traced back to the Yellow Emperor era 5,000 years ago. According to the “Sixteen Classics”, the Yellow Emperor caught and killed him with his stomach filled to be a ball. He ordered many subordinates to take it………

[Weightlifting] Weightlifting joined the Olympic programme in 1896.

Weightlifting was lifted as one of nine officialcompetition sports at the 1st Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. Today lifters compete in the snatch and the clean and jerk and are classified according to their combined total result. Men compete in eight bodyweight categories: up to 56kg, 62kg, 69kg, 77kg, 85kg, 94kg, 105kg and +105kg.……

[Handball] Handball joined the Olympic programme in 1936.

[Hockey]

Hockey originates in France and means shepherd’s stick. It appeared 1200 or more years earlier than the Olympic Movement. According to historians, hockey had existed during the ancient cultural periods in many counties……

[Judo] Judo joined the Olympic programme in 1964.

Judo originates from Japan. The 1st World Judo Competition took place in Tokyo in 1956. Men’s Events broke into the 18th Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, but was cancelled in the Games in 1968.……

[Modern Pentathlon] Modern Pentathlon joined the Olympic programme in 1912.

Modern Pentathlon was created by Pierre de Coubertin to measure comprehensive capability of an athlete. It is made up of horse riding, fencing, swimming, pistol shooting and running.

[Softball]

The birth of softball was so dramatic. In an American rugby in 1887, Yale University defeated Harvard University. After the games, a graduate from the Yale University threw a boxing glove to a student from the Harvard University in the celebration ceremony held in a Chicago’s boat club;……

[Taekwondo]

Called as Taekkyeon in ancient times, taekwondo is a traditional Korean martial art, which means "the way of kicking and punching". The origin of taekwondo dates back to Korea's Three-Kingdom era (c.50 BC) when Silla Dynasty warriors……

[Tennis] Tennis joined the Olympic programme in 1896.

The earliest recognizable relative to tennis, as we know it, was "jeu de paume", played by missionaries in 12th - 13th century France. Later, it was introduced to other European and American countries, and gradually evolved into today’s tennis sport……

[Table Tennis] Table Tennis joined the Olympic programme in 1988.

Table Tennis made its first debut at the 24th Olympic Games in 1988, and has taken place for consecutive five times at Olympics by now. The table tennis is run every 4 years, and China is with doubt the “Dream Team” on this sport……

Shooting originates from hunting and military. In 15 century, harquebus shooting competitionoccurred; and shooting of running deer was on the rise in Scandinavian Peninsula about 500 years ago……

[Archery]

The origin of archery can be dated back to about 50,000 BC. The earliest recorded archery tournaments took place during the Zhou (Chou) dynasty (1027- 256 BC) in China. Such events were attended by Chinese nobility……

[Triathlon]

As one of emerging comprehensive sports, triathlon is composed of swimming in natural water, road cycling and road running in sequence. Athletes should complete such a process at one time……

[Sailing] Sailing joined the Olympic programme in 1896.

Sailing joined the Olympic programme at the 1st Games in 1896, while didn’t be held for bad weather. At the 2nd Olympic Games in Paris in 1900, sailing was held at seven levels. Except the 3rd Olympic Games at St.Louis……

[Swimming] Swimming joined the Olympic programme in 1896.

Diving originates during the development of swimming. In 5 century, on some earthen bottles portrayed some boys dived with their head down. In 17 century, diving from seashore and mast along Scandinavian Peninsula, Mediterranean Sea and Red Sea was popular……

[Water Polo]

Water Polo originated in England in 1960s, when people threw football during swimming and thus call it the water football. Then it gradually became a competitive sport. In 1869, water polo with flags marking sideline and goal line……

[Gymnastics] Gymnastics joined the Olympic programme in 1896.

Gymnastics firstly appeared at the 1st Olympic Games according to Olympic files, including pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars, horizontal bar and rope climbing except freestyle gymnastics and only for men. Later, this sport added exercise with clubs……

[Trampoline]

Trampoline is becoming a special sport, especially a competitive sport after development and improvement. Gymnastics Artistic joined the Olympic programme at the 23rd Games in Los Angles in 1984. In 2000, trampoline was included at the 27th Olympics Games in Sydney in 2000……

[Canoe] Canoe joined the Olympic programme in 1936.

In 1924, canoe performance competition was made on the Seine between Canada and the USA at the 8th Olympic Games in Paris. The canoe was included in the Olympic programme in the 11th Berlin Olympic Games in 1936, when nine events were……

[Wrestling] Wrestling joined the Olympic programme in 1904.

Wrestling Greco-Roman joined the Olympic programme at the 1st Olympic Games in 1896. At the 3rd Olympic Games in 1904, wrestling freestyle was also included in the Olympic programme.
