(BEIJING, Sept.29) -- Over 210,000 people in Beijing have been registered to offer voluntary services for the 2008 Olympic Games in the past month, according to official statistics.
An official of the Beijing Olympic Volunteer Work Coordination Group said the number of volunteer applicants for the Beijing Olympic Games and Paralympic Games totaled 210,915 from August 28 when the recruitment program started to September 28, 2006.
In addition, over 680,000 hotline calls and face-to-face inquiries have been recorded in the period. Universities and colleges received 529,167 inquirers compared to a total of 644,820 citywide. Inquiries outside the campus stood at 115,653 and Hotline calls reached 36,248. Among the volunteer applicants, 157,486 came from universities and colleges, accounting for 74.7 percent.
The official said the age group of 16-25 years accounted for 76 percent of the 52,143 on-line applicants, with females covering 61 percent of the total.
About 70,000 Games-time volunteers will be needed for the Olympic Games and 30,000 for the Paralympic Games.
Besides, tens of thousands of city volunteers will be needed to offer services at key areas around the Olympic competition venues and city-wide transport hubs, scenic spots and commercial areas. The recruitment of this kind of volunteers will be launched next year.
