(BEIJING, Oct. 18) -- In an on-site visit to the Beijing Municipal
Environmental Protection Bureau on Wednesday, Beijing's top leader Liu Qi called
for more efforts to tackle the bottleneck of the air pollution in the capital
city.
After debriefing a report on the generation of air pollutants and regional
pollution control, Liu noted that the environmental protection need to be seen
as an important strategic task for the construction of the socialist harmonious
society, a major measure to carry out the scientific development outlook, a
groundbreaking program to construct a livable city and a key project to stage a
high-level Olympics with distinguishing features, which will help to showcase a
good image of the city and the nation with the achievements of environmental
construction.
He listed the pollution from dust-raising at construction sites, motor
vehicle emissions and coal smoke as major control targets and urged all
departments of the municipal government to draw up new plans with innovative
ideas, put in more funds, take economic, legal and necessary administrative
measures, mobilize the talent of experts and the technical-scientific personnel
as well as the resources of the communities at large.
"The environmental renovation is a long-term task and we need to uphold the
spirit of the Long March of the Red Army to overcome every difficulty," said
Liu, who is also secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist
Party of China and president of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games
of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG).
