Sports career:
Started playing table tennis at the age of five. Joined the Zhengzhou table tennis team instead of the Henan provincial team for being too short. Winning both the team and singles titles in a national junior tournament at 10, she was later taken on by the Henan provincial team. Joined the national team in 1988.

The only Chinese double gold medalist in the 25th Olympics and four-gold medalist in both the 25th and 26th Olympics. Presented the gold medal by IOC President of the time, J.A. Samaranch in person at both Games.
At present:
Studied in Tsinghua University, Cambridge University and Nottingham University and attained the degree of Bachelor of English and the degree of Master of the Contemporary Era of China. Worked as a member of the IOC Ethics Commission and Sport and Environment Commission in 2002 and now member of the IOC Athletes Commission, staff member of the Marketing Department of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games.
