(BEIJING, Feb. 7) -- The Beijing authorities are going to make new efforts in
2007 to improve citizens' manners and upgrade the city's image in anticipation
of the 2008 Olympic Games.
Under the slogan "Welcome the Olympics, Improve Manners and Foster New
Attitudes" and "I Join, I Contribute, I Enjoy," Beijing citizens are now invited
to stop using dirty words and to behave appropriately and friendly, to keep the
streets clean and beautiful, to observe courtesy rules at sport venues, to politely line up in public places and treat
others with sincerity and honesty.
The city departments will take advantage of the major events in preparation
of the Olympic Games and large-scale sport competitions to promote the campaign,
said Zhang Huiguang, head of the local Office for Civic and Cultural
Edification. Promotional activities will be held on the occasion of the 500-day,
one year, and 300-day countdown to the Olympic Games, she told a press
conference at the Beijing Olympic Media Center on Wednesday.
One upcoming event is the "Polite Queuing Day" on February 11, when the
Wangfujing Street in downtown Beijing will host a gathering of leading city
officials and ordinary people who will try to sell new, more polite ways of
lining up to the local citizenry.
Zhang said themed cultural activities will also be held during the one-week
Spring Festival beginning February 18 to increase the campaign's social
impact.
