Senior officials underline security for Beijing Olympics (photo attached)

(BEIJING, Jan. 16) -- State and municipal officials urged more efforts to enhance security for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games at the 13th working session of the Beijing Olympic Games Security Work Coordination Group on Tuesday.

Following a report on the current situation with the security work and plans for 2007, Minister of Public Security Zhou Yongkang told the audience that 2007 is a key year for the Games' preparations. The security endeavor should focus on key areas and strive for a breakthrough in coping with possible challenges.

Zhou, who is also member of the Political Bureau and secretary of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) and state councilor, stressed the need to improve and implement various security plans, ensure security for the test events, strengthen information gathering and research, attach importance to policy review on major issues concerning the successful staging of the Olympic Games, enhance international cooperation, build competent security teams and push the security work forward to a stage of all-round competitive operation.

He called for active exploration, bold innovation, united command, rapid reaction, orderly coordination and high efficiency in the security system.

Seeing security as a political mission, BOCOG President Liu Qi told the meeting that key goals for this year's preparatory work should be a well-prepared command system at different levels, a well-prepared Games-time resources supply and logistics network, well-prepared and equipped venues, well-prepared Games-time operation procedures and service criteria as well as a well-prepared managing team.

Security is a major component of the preparatory work which need to be shifted to Games-time competitive operation this year, said Liu, who is also member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and secretary of Beijing Municipal CPC Committee.

Ministerial and municipal officials in charge of the security work related to the Olympic Games attended the meeting.
