(BEIJING, Feb. 1) -- All hotels which have signed the Lodging Agreement with
the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) need
to go through a new examination and verification procedure to ensure that they
meet the environmental standards, a BOCOG official said Thursday.
According to Xiang Ping, vice-director of the BOCOG Games Service Department,
BOCOG hopes the process will be completed by the end of this year. The hotels
which fail to meet the environmental standards will be struck off the list of
Olympic Hotels.
"Green Olympics" is one of the three key concepts upheld by the Beijing
Olympic Games and the organizers are determined to integrate the environment
into every aspect of the Olympic preparations, including accommodation
services.
The BOCOG guidelines formulated and published in 2003 require all 122 member
hotels of the Games to meet a series of precise environmental standards in
management, energy-saving, pollution prevention as well as in their guest
services.
In early 2006 the National Tourism Administration promulgated the
LB/T007-2006 industrial standards defining the so-called "Green Tourist Hotels",
which are almost similar to BOCOG's guidelines. "Today, any hotel that has
passed the "Green Tourist Hotels" verification standards, will be considered as
having fulfilled BOCOG's guidelines, Xiang told a press conference at the
Beijing Olympic Media Center.
Last year 52 out of the 112 hotels passed the verification and Xiang urged
them not let up in preparation for the new verifications.
Xiang promised that enough rooms will be made available for accredited media,
sponsors and their guests, people from national Olympic committees and
international sports federations during the Games. "I am confident about the
quality of their services," she added.
