(BEIJING, May 14) -- The Beijing-based Asuwei solid waste treatment plant started to generate power on March 10, an environmental victory turning house refuse into a power resource.
The plant is located in Changping District, 35km northwest of the center of Beijing and has a capacity of 2,724 kilowatts. It can generate a total of 20 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year, the equivalent of the electricity consumption of 1,7000 families or the electricity produced by 1,3000 tons of standard coal, according to Beijing Daily.
Recycling methane, a toxic gas, to generate electricity, the leachate treatment facility can treat 13 million cubic meters of methane, and reduce annual emissions of Carbon dioxide by 80,000 tons.
