SHANGHAI, June 9 (Xinhua) -- New routines of high difficulty are to prevail in China's national gymnastics championships to be staged here from June 9 to 18, Zhang Peiwen, team leader of the national team, said here on Saturday.
The national championships will function as the first trials towards the Beijing Olympic Games, and also play a role in deciding China's lineup for the world championships in Stuttgart, Germany, in September.
"As a qualifier for the Olympic Games and world championships, no one can downplay it. All the high-difficulty routines will be shown here, so the championships will check up the output of last winter's training," said Zhang.
The national championships will be connecting its track to the Olympic Games by simulating the Olympic schedule. In the Beijing Olympic Games, the finals for men's and women's team and all-around events will be held in the morning.
"It won't be a problem for the gymnasts to compete in the morning. The morning exercise is a routine for Chinese athletes, so they don't have to work hard to adapt to the Olympic timetable," he said.
"Everyone in the national team has been training very hard to win a berth in the Olympic squad, so this will be a precious opportunity for all of them. Each needs to do their best to secure a berth," said Zhang.
"This tournament can also tell us the success rate in delivering new routines. No one dares to risk high difficulty in the cost of stability."
China's newly-fabricated routines turned to be ineffective in the national champions' tournament held in Fushan, Guangdong province, last May, with blunders from world champions like Yang Wei, Xiao Qin, Cheng Fei and Li Ya.
China stunned the world by winning eight titles in the Aarhus world championships 2006 in Denmark, largely attributing to the application of high-difficulty routines and stability.
Triple world champion Yang Wei has employed new actions in all six categories after the Aarhus world championships, but has yet to prove a stride forward. The outcome from the tournament can provide a glimpse of China's place in the impending world events.
According to Huang Yubin, head coach of the national team, Chinese team will decide its preparatory squad for the Olympics and world championships from the national championships.
After the tournament, the national team will pick up the overall 15-strong contingent for both genders and seven out of each fifteen can finally reach out to compete in the Stuttgart world championships.
