(BEIJING, Jan. 9) -- Two officials in charge of volunteer management for
the 15th Doha Asian Games briefed their colleagues in Beijing on their
experience Tuesday.
Khaled Helaly, manager of Doha 2006 Volunteers Program, gave a detailed
introduction to many aspects of the program, including projection, objectives,
strategies, project composition, recruitment, maintenance and stimulation.
In a country with a population of less than one million, Khaled organized and
prepared a volunteer management team comprising nationals of 13 countries, whose
experience in large-scale international sport events was nil before joining the
team. Khaled's effort since 2004 resulted in the formation of a contingent of
16, 000 volunteers, including five percent of host country Qatar's citizens.
Their devotion and smiles assured success of the Games' volunteer endeavor.
Reem Khader, in charge of communications and public relations for the
volunteer program, told the audience how she managed to train volunteers to
establish good relations with news media.
The guest speakers were invited by the Office of Beijing Olympic Games
Volunteer Work Coordination Group, the Beijing Municipal Committee of China
Communist Youth League, Volunteer Department of Beijing Organizing Committee for
the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG), and Beijing Volunteer Association.
People involved in the volunteer work for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games
attended the briefing which is seen constructive. Similar activities are
expected to be organized to enhance Beijing volunteers' know-how.
