From now on, elementary and high schools in Shanghai will pay more attention to the health conditions of students, rather than pushing them into good high schools and colleges.

The information was released on June 7, by the local administration of education.

Overemphasis on the marks of examinations has caused the physical conditions of Shanghai students to decrease fiercely. According to an investigation in 2005, more than 25% of students suffered from obesity, and 80% of them were near-sighted. Besides, their speed, explosive force and stamina had greatly dropped compared with kids of former generations.

The unbalanced education that overlooks PE and skill training will come to an end, for it does not only affect the kids' health badly, but also narrow their vision.

From 2007, there will be at least 3 PE classes and 2 game classes every week for elementary and high school students in Shanghai. Exercises and ocular gymnastics will be their daily necessities.
