(BEIJING, May 16) -- The World's top wireless operator China Mobile launched a "Green Box" campaign on Wednesday to collect used hand-phones, batteries and accessories in an attempt to reduce environmental degradation.

The campaign was started on the occasion of the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day (May 17), which aims at reducing pollution of earth and water by electric waste and increase public awareness of environmental protection, according to the organizers.

State Environmental Protection Administration Vice-Minister Li Ganjie and officials from the Information Industry Ministry, Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) and Education Ministry attended the launching ceremony.

At the end of the first quarter of 2007, the number of China Mobile's subscribers topped 316 million.
