    Sports career:


    Liang began volleyball training in Chengdu Spare-time Sports School in 1975. and was taken on by the Chengdu volleyball team the following year. She joined the Sichuan provincial team in 1977 and the national team for intensified training in 1979.

    As deputy captain of the Chinese national women's volleyball team, Liang Yan is the only member of the team which clinched five straight wins at major world tournaments in the 1980s.

    She took up volleyball as a primary school pupil and entered the Liaoning provincial volleyball team in 1977. She joined the national youth team for intensified training in 1981 and the national team the following year.
