(BEIJING, April 28) -- Since the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games need more
volunteers for translation services, the organizers have decided to increase the
number of such volunteers.
High learning institutions, government agencies and enterprises where foreign
languages are frequently used and translators are numerous have been targeted to
boost the supply of competent volunteers, according to a meeting of the Beijing
Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) and Beijing Olympic Volunteer Work Coordination
Group on Saturday.
The organizers intend to enroll another 4,000 voluntary translators covering
56 foreign languages to serve in VIP escort, sport team liaison, sport
organization, media technical support, anti-doping and other areas.
The Beijing Olympic Games will need 70,000 Games-time volunteers and the
Paralympic Games another 30,000. The specialized volunteers, including
translators, to offer support for VIP escort, translation, vehicle driving,
media operations, sport organization, medical service,
sport displays, awarding-ceremonies, accommodation and security check-up are
expected to account for half of the Games-time volunteers. Beijing has been
designated as a major source of specialized volunteers.
