   4. Ecological protection

   4.1 Urban greening and beautification


Chaoyang Park

   In 2005, 812 hectares greening area of city ecological construction reached was completed, including 426 hectares of newly-constructed greening area and 386 hectares of reconstructed greening area.

   The greening of 74 roofs was completed within the eight urban districts, 120,000 square meters more than the annual plan.

   4.2 Afforestation

   In 2005, Beijing Municipal Government completed 10,700 hectares of afforestation and planted 17.92 million trees. The forest greening rate in Beijing reached 50.5% and urban greening coverage rate reached 42.5% with an average green land area of 46 square meters per capita.

   In 2005, the green channel construction of "Five Rivers and Ten Roads" was basically completed, forming a green channel of 1035km long.

   4.3 Wildlife protection

   On December 8, 2005, Beijing Center for Wildlife Rescue and Breeding was inaugurated and formally put into operation. Its main functions involve rescue and breeding of wild animals, monitoring of wild animal epidemic diseases and infectious focus, scientific research and education base for wild animal protection, and cooperative and exchange center for wild animal protection, etc.
