The top four seeds all came through the opening round of the Boys' Singles
event at the Polish Youth Open in Wladyslawowo Cetniewo on Wednesday 30th May
2007 unscathed.
Top seed Abdel-Kader Salifou of France, second seed Russia's Mikhail Paykov,
third seed Latvia's Matiss Burgis and fourth seed Vincent Baubet, also from
France, made a successful start to the second stage of proceedings.
However, for the seventh seed, Belgium's Benjamin Rogiers and for three
winners on the ITTF World Junior Circuit in 2007, it was defeat.
Indonesians Suffer
Indonesia's Ficky Supit Santoso, who won in Bahrain, lost to Romania's Radu
Voinea; the latter winning 11-8, 11-7, 8-11, 11-5, 14-16, 11-6, whilst his
colleague, Gilang Maulana, who succeeded in Qatar, was also beaten by European
opposition.
He lost to the host nation's Patryk Chojnowski; the tall Polish rising star
won 11-6, 11-9, 11-7, 11-5.
Czech Out
Meanwhile, it was also the end of the road for the Czech Republic's Tomas
Tregler, the winner of the Boys' Singles title at the United Arab Emirates
Junior Open.
He lost to the rapidly improving Juan Antonio Víla, the young man from the
Dominican Republic, whose family is steeped in the traditions of table tennis,
won one of the best matches of the opening round. He won 11-13, 12-10, 7-11,
7-11, 11-3, 11-3, 11-5.
Exit Seventh Seed
Defeats for three champions and there was also a reverse for the young man
who reached the Boys' Singles final in both Tunisia and Canada. Belgium's
Benjamin Rogiers lost to Hungary's Daniel Kriston in five games, the Magyar
teenager winning 7-11, 11-9, 11-5, 11-9, 12-10.
A reverse for Benjamin Rogiers, the number seven seed, but for the remaining
highly rated players it was success.
Top Four Seeds
Abdel-Kader Salifou beat Sweden's Simon Arvidsson 9-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-7,
12-10, Mikhail Paykov accounted for Portugal's Ivo Silva 11-7, 11-6, 11-7, 6-11,
11-8, Matiss Burgiss defeated Croatia's Matej Mamut 9-11, 11-8, 11-3, 11-7, 11-2
whilst Vincent Baubet ended the hopes of Belgium's Damien Robert 11-3, 11-6,
11-6, 11-7.
Success for the top four seeds and also for the players seeded five, six and
eight.
Victories for Russia and Japan
Russia's Artem Utochkin stopped Hungary's Daniel Kosiba in his tracks;
Japan's Kentaro Muichi halted the progress of Sweden's Mattias Oversjo whilst
Yoshikazu Kai, also from Japan, overcame Luxembourg's Christian Kill.
Notable Wins
Meanwhile, in the Girls' Singles, the casualties were less marked; the top
ten seeded players all receiving byes in the opening round but there were
notable results.
Romania's Irina Hoza, currently in eighth place on the ITTF World Junior
Circuit Girls' Singles Standings, lost to Japan's Ayuka Taniokas whilst France's
Aurore Dessaint, who is in fourteenth place on the Standings, was beaten by
Poland's Katarzyna Grzybowska.
