(BEIJING, April 22) -- Chaired by President of the International
Paralympic Committee (IPC) Sir Philip Craven, the 46th meeting of the IPC
Governing Board opened in Beijing on Sunday.
The three-day meeting will receive updates from the Beijing Organizing
Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) on the preparations for the 13th Paralympic
Games to be held in 2008. The updates include accessibility, communications,
education, ticketing, marketing, partnership and services for the Olympic
Family. Board members will also tour the construction sites of the Olympic venues and ancillary facilities, such as the National
Stadium, National Aquatics Center and the Paralympic Village.
The organization of the 2008 Paralympic Games, the construction of accessible
facilities, the marketing and ticketing programs as well as the recruitment of
volunteers, are proceeding according to schedule, and a more harmonious social
environment is being created for the benefit of the disabled as a result of
Paralympic publicity , BOCOG Executive Vice-President Yang Shu'an told the
opening session. He promised that BOCOG will earnestly carry out the directives
of the Chinese government to make the Paralympics as splendid as the
Olympics.
Tang Xiaoquan, CDPF Vice-President and BOCOG Executive Vice-President also
attended the opening session.
Established in 1989 and headquartered in Bonn (Germany), the IPC comprises
162 national and regional Paralympic committees and 4 international sports
federations for the disabled. As an international body overseeing the Paralympic
Movement, the IPC is responsible for guiding and coordinating world sports
championships and other large-scale sports events for the disabled. Over the
years, the IOC has had good relations with BOCOG and CDPF.
