(BEIJING, June 2) -- Blue skies, rows of trees and
pleasant grassland caught the eyes of three dozen journalists from 19 foreign
media during a two-day news coverage in Inner Mongolia over the weekend at the
invitation of the Beijing Olympic Media Center.
Local residents informed them about their afforestation efforts, which aim at
stopping desertification and stand storms. What they are doing is basically to
build a "protective screen" for Beijing.
They learned among other things that since the farmers started converting
their cereal plots into woods, annual per capita income in Fuquan Village of
Taibus Banner has grown to 2,610 yuan in 2006, against less than 700 when they
were relocated.
Since the beginning of this year, the media center has organized several
trips for the foreign media.
